Abdul's story

"We were living in each others pockets and I just needed my own space."

Abdul was living in a two bedroom flat, which he shared with his three siblings and his Mum. The relationship with his family had broken down after his father had abandoned them.  Abdul was referred by Social Services and subsequently offered a place at our Stephens Rd scheme.

Soon after he moved in, Abdul's key-worker helped him to re-start his college placement and book a number of sessions with a counsellor to address the family relationship issues.

After a year at the service, there have been one or two ups and downs, but Abdul has now successfully completed his college course (NVQ Level 1 in Plumbing) and has been accepted onto the Government Apprenticeship Scheme.  He is hoping to become a self employed plumber.

Abdul said, "I just couldn't hack it at home.  We were living in each others pockets and I just needed my own space.  Being at St Stephens Road has given me the chance to get my head sorted out and finish my training.  If I had stayed at home, I would have probably ended up in prison.  But now I'm getting on with my family and looking at getting a proper job as a plumber."
